Top Five Reasons to Work With Troubled Youth

Working with troubled youth as a child psychologist, youth sponsor, social worker, or friend can be an exhausting, thankless job. Why would anyone choose to work at such a job? After all, the pay is usually nothing or next to nothing, the hours are often long and unpredictable, and sometimes you do not even get to see the end result of all your labor. Well, there are actually some good and worthy reasons people choose to work with troubled youth, and here are the top five:

1. There's a Huge Need: As the divorce rate skyrockets, drugs and alcohol are made ever more available, and television and songs portray more and more anger and violence, it's no wonder that more teens and young adults are feeling lost and alone and are Acting out against the people and systems they feel have put them in their terrible situation. One excellent reason to work with troubled teens, then, is that the need is great and that it is getting greater each and every day.

2. It's Rewarding: Working with troubled kids is tough. It takes everything you have and then a little bit more. It's not your typical nine-to-five job because when you really care about the kids you're working with, you are either constantly thinking about them or almost always available to them. This is tiring, but it is also incredibly rewarding to know that you've made a difference in someone's life.

3. It's a Learning Experience: One would think that working with troubled youth would make you the teacher and the youths the learners, but this is very rarely the case. As with all good relationships, a relationship with a at-risk youth is a relationship of give and take. Even in the worst of times, working with troubled youths can help you learn to open up, be more patient, and let go of your petty little anger. Besides this, working with troubled youth can improve your communication skills, your listening skills, and your sense of understanding and empathy.

4. It's Never Boring: Sitting at a desk all day answering phone calls and pushing papers can get stale in about five minutes. Working with troubled youth, on the other hand, never grows dull. Every day, you have to dig deep to find the strength you need to build solid relationships with troubled youth. Because no two kids are the same and one kid can become a different person between Monday and Friday, you never know what to expect, either. If you're sick of doing the same exact thing day in and day out, working with troubled youth as a full-time job or a part-time passion might be a great solution for you.

5. It's Worthwhile: Unlike some jobs that make you feel like you're just a corporate cog, working with troubled youngs allows you to really make an impact on the world, one kid at a time. With each life you change, you're making the world a slightly better place, making the job all the more rewarding and interesting.

The Seven Cataracts Adventure Hike: A Mountain Sliding, Canyoneering Exploration Into Willow Canyon

Arizona is an incredibly gorgeous, wildly diverse state with topography ranging from low level desert landscapes, to high mountain peaks and alpine forest ranges. More than any other geologic feature though, Arizona is widely renowned for its many beautiful and remote rock canyons, deep slot gorges, water falls and pools which are scattered throughout the state. However, what I find even more amazing, is that many of these backcountry wilderness canyons can be accessed through “non-technical” canyon hiking routes which don’t require ropes and are literally within a single day’s trip from either Phoenix or Tucson. For an excellent late summer to early fall day trip and hike, if you’re up for more of an exciting challenge and an extraordinary and scenic day trip, then take a mountain sliding, canyoneering hiking adventure to Seven Cataracts, and explore Willow Canyon, Tucson, Arizona.

It was the Labor Day holiday and early on Sunday morning that I left Phoenix, about 6am, heading out of town on I-10 East and arrived in Tucson by 7:30am. At the Ina Road exit, I swung off the freeway and took a left, heading east 8 miles, and met up with the TLC Hiking Group, led and organized by Eric Kinneman, at the Westin La Paloma Resort and arrived by 8am. Because the parking was said to be limited at the trailhead for this hike, we carpooled it together and set out for the day’s hike and journey heading east on Sunrise Blvd. by 8:25am.

The beautiful drive on Sunrise Blvd across the northern stretches of Tucson and through the rolling foothills of the gorgeous Santa Catalina mountains has always been a favorite of mine. The Santa Catalina Mountains are Tucson’s highest mountain range reaching all the way up to 9157 feet in elevation at its very top, Mount Lemmon. To get there and to reach the trailhead for our hike, we zig zagged it across Tucson, driving east on Sunrise Blvd to Swan Road, turned right (south), to River Road, turned left (east), then a right onto Sabino Canyon Road, left onto Tanque Verde Road and headed east on Tanque Verde Road till we reached the Catalina Highway, aka the “Mount Lemmon Scenic Byway”, and then turned left again.

It was about 4 miles or so after making the left turn onto the Catalina Highway that you enter the Coronado National Forest and start the winding ascent up into the rugged Santa Catalina mountains. Although it’s been a long time since I was last there, I was still amazed at just how beautiful and gorgeous this drive really is. Immediately as you head on up in elevation beginning at 3000 feet, the views are absolutely breathtaking with each switchback and hairpin curve offering a new and amazing rock formation or gorgeous canyon vista off to the distance. If you like to stop and take a lot of pictures, as I always like to do, you have plenty of opportunity to do so because this drive offers a number of vista points to enjoy along the way. However, at about mile marker 5, just past the Molino Canyon Overlook, there is a pay station where you must purchase a $5 Coronado National Forest day use recreation pass if you’re planning on stopping anywhere further along the drive. We purchased the day use passes, one each per vehicle and journeyed on for three more miles until we reached the Seven Cataracts Vista Point, just past Thimble Peak Vista and roughly at about mile marker 8 and about 1/3 of the way up to Mount Lemmon.

We pulled into the Seven Cataracts Vista point, and our trailhead, parked and started out on our day’s hiking and canyoneering adventure by 9am. The view looking down into Willow Canyon below was absolutely beautiful, but also incredibly steep too! Immediately, right from the beginning, the drop off into Willow Canyon on this “day use” trail was intense, to say the very least. Estimated to be roughly about a 1000-1300 feet descent straight down with a 60% grade on all loose dirt, gravel and rocks, each one of us had to literally drop down to the ground on our “butts” and from section to section, slide it on down for about a total of a ¼ of a mile until we had made down to the bottom. What a site it was to see too, really exciting and a lot of fun! However, this “non-official” trail, mainly used by experienced canyoneers, is rated very difficult, some even say treacherous or dangerous, so I would not recommend doing this hike on your own unless you are an experienced canyon hiker or have an experienced canyon hiking guide with you.

Once we had all safely slid our way down and reached the bottom and after a quick group photo, Eric began leading our group on our canyoneering exploration further down into Willow Canyon, scrambling, boulder hopping and class 3 climbing through partially running water falls. Really gorgeous and spectacular scenery all the way down too! We continued on for about a ¼ mile where we had reached a really nice running falls and enjoyed the opportunity to cool off, rest and enjoy the peaceful tranquility and beauty of this remote and lesser known wilderness canyon. Meanwhile, Eric, along with several other adventurous members, journeyed on for another 1/3 to ¼ mile, and after more scrambling, boulder hopping and class 3-4 climbing, reached a gorgeous 100 foot water fall and a larger swimming hole deep enough he said that even with a jump off a 10 foot cliff, they could not hit bottom! Amazing!

After about an hour or so break, we decided it was time to start making our way back. Now it was time for the most challenging part of our canyoneering adventure, making it back! So we began our trek back through Willow Canyon the same way we came, scrambling, boulder hopping, wading through the pools, then climbing it back up through the water fall. It only took a short time though and within minutes we had all made it safely back up and to the base of the side of the hill we had originally “slid” down on earlier. It was here that we met back up with Eric then broke up into two groups. You could decide to either make the ascent in the same place you came down with the 60% grade on all loose dirt and gravel, where Eric said it was for every 3 steps up, a slide of one or two back. Or my friend Dan decided it looked like if you took it up a little further down to the left, you could more easily climb it straight up the rocks and cliff and up to the top. So myself, along with several other members followed Dan’s lead and hand over foot, we slowly and carefully climbed it, section by section until we safely reached it back up to the top. Wow, for me and someone who’s scared of heights, and not experienced at rock climbing, it was challenging but a lot of fun and incredible workout too!

Once back at the top and at the Seven Cataracts Vista parking lot, we waited for the final members to safely return, then by 12:15pm we got back into our cars to drive the rest of the way up to Mount Lemmon for lunch at the Iron Door Restaurant. The views along the way were again, spectacular as you make your way from elevation 5000 feet on up to the Mount Lemmon Sky Valley, elevation roughly about 8200 feet. Although the signs of the devastating 2003 Aspen fire were noticeable, it was still very beautiful and the temperatures by this time of day, low to mid 80’s and very cool and refreshing.

However, with the 2.5 hour wait at the restaurant, due to it being a weekend and also a holiday, we decided it was best to turn around and head back instead.

We arrived back in Tucson at about 2pm and after an excellent lunch at a little restaurant called Renee’s Organic Oven on Tanque Verde Road, we arrived back at the Westin La Paloma Resort by 4pm, where those of us who had just came down for the day, headed back to Phoenix from there to return home again by about 6pm.

In all, it was really an extraordinary canyoneering exploration and waterfall hiking adventure with the TLC Hiking Group, carefully researched, well planned and thought through to the last detail by Eric Kinneman himself. Really had it all, amazingly beautiful, exciting, yet also very challenging. I think that this hike is best summed up though in Eric Kinneman’s own words in which he quotes, “The Seven Cataracts Waterfall Adventure Hike is an amazing hike that I highly recommend people taking. It will test your fears, give you an incredible workout and take you through some magnificent canyons, and a 100 foot waterfall and swimming hole, seldom seen by anyone. What more could anyone ask for!”

Is Nutrisystem Really Less Expensive Than Buying Groceries Containing Diet Foods?

I sometimes hear from people who have heard claims that you actually save money on your grocery bill by eating Nutrisystem food rather than trying to make your own diet meals. Understandably, people can wonder about these claims. Even though that we all know that the costs of groceries today can bring quite a shock when you are checking out, the Nutrisystem diet has costs associated with it as well.

Common comments are things like: “I’m looking at the costs per day on Nutrisystem. And I’m reading that it’s anywhere from $8 to $11 each day depending on the plan. I am wondering if this is really cheaper than buying groceries.” I will try to break this down to give you an idea of the costs comparisons in the following article.

Your Grocery Store Needs Go Way Down Once You Go On Nutrisystem: Some people are under the impression that all you have to do on this diet is to eat the prepackaged meals that they send you. This isn’t necessarily the case. You do need to add in fresh snacks with each meal. They ask you to add in fresh vegetables, fruits, dairy and whole grains. And this is going to require groceries. This might sound extensive, but it truly isn’t. We’re talking about small servings that you can often buy in bulk. An example might be an apple, a piece of string cheese, a piece of lean meat or a slice of whole grain bread. The point is that for most people, the grocery store necessities do not add up to that much money. Many people are already buying these types of foods for their family. I would think that you could buy a week’s worth of grocery store side items for less than $30.

How Much Do You Normally Spend On Groceries?: If you try to do any research on this, you’ll probably find that estimates on average monthly grocery store budgets can vary widely. That’s because individuals and families tend to spend an amount on groceries that is a percentage of their income and is based on the size of their households. Of course, you are probably the best one to ask about how much you spend per week or per month on groceries. The number that you are looking for is the amount of groceries that you spend on yourself and not on your family. The reason for this is that even if you go on the diet and most of your food is covered and provided, your family’s meals are not. So, you will still need to buy groceries for the rest of your family.

I was interested to know about the average cost of groceries for American families and individuals in order to get a rough idea of how much many people spend. And I was able to find a 2009 statistic from The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics which found that the average American spent $6,443 annually food. Statistics from the census bureau indicates that the average family size in the United States is 3.14 people in the household. So if we divide one number into another, this works out to be about $2148 per year for each person. If you figure this out per month, you’re looking at $179 per month per person, on average.

Now, if you look at the rough estimate I gave above of the grocery side items, this comes out to about $120 per month for your grocery store sides. This is $60 less than the average cost of groceries. That means that if you’re anywhere close to these estimates and averages, you would spend less on groceries with the diet, even with having to buy some groceries for side items. Of course these are just averages. You may spend more or less than the averages. But I do think that it’s notable that you can go on a diet for less or at least for a comparable sum than what most people spend on groceries. If you’ve ever tried to diet by cooking your own foods, you probably already know that health or diet foods are expensive at the grocery store.

5 Top Reasons to Start Your Own 1st Snow Cone Stand

1. You can start a Snow Cone Stand with no debt

Often times the main barrier to entry for a potential entrepreneur is having the cash or being afraid to take out loans and get into debt. New entrepreneurs are scared they won’t be able to pay it back. There is always a possibility of failure and no entrepreneur wants to fail and go into bankruptcy. Even simple businesses such as a coffee shop, small restaurant, or boutique will require the average individual to take out loans and debt.

It is realistic to start a stand for as little as $5,000, though this number can exceed $20,000 for a brand new stand and commercial equipment. All of this will depend on how thrifty one wants to be. Almost anyone can save up $5,000 in a relatively short period. For potential entrepreneurs this is a great way to attempt your 1st business without spending every dime to your name or taking out excessive loans.

2. Snow Cone Stands have scalable Business Models

Less than $10,000 to start your first business is as low a barrier to entry as you may find. It is completely reasonable to start a snow cone stand for an amount even a high school student could save over a year or two. Like many fast food owners, snow cone stand owners can continue to fund new locations with profits from the current ones. In fact, it’s often easier to do so with a snow cone stand than any other business I have seen.

It’s possible in a typical summer to show net profit between five and twenty-five thousand. This is especially possible if you plan to operate the stand yourself and avoid high labor costs. If you are thrifty and smart about the stands you purchase then you could open one or more new snow cone stands every year. With a some time and experience it is possible to open several new locations in a season.

3. Snow Cone Stands have a simple Business Model

The business is both financially scalable and operationally scalable. Snow cone trailers are easy to run and with small amounts of supervision, you can hire high school kids to 90% of the work. A couple of dependable employees an entrepreneur can run multiple locations with the same effort as one. The owner must be sure to handle making and delivering ice, mixing and delivering syrup as well as handling the money. The owner should collect deposits and make payroll. These jobs are as easy to do for one location as several. When an owner already has to make ice and mix syrup it doesn’t take much additional time to do this for several stands.

4. It’s a business you can run in your spare time.

Even though you may not want your very own snow cone empire, the point above can apply in a different way. This business model allows you to operate it in addition to your regular job. If you work a normal 40 hr/week job as many do, then this may be a great part-time project. Once your stand is up and running it shouldn’t too difficult to hire kids to work during the day and then you can handle the other work at night. My most recent snow cone stand had high school kids work during the day and weekends, and I split the profits with a friend for him to make ice and syrup, pay the rent and payroll, and make deposits. I was running this business putting in less than 5 hours per week.

5. Snow Cone Stands have an great cash margins

Snow cones typically costs $2-5. The cost of goods sold for one include ice, syrup, cup, spoon, straw and napkin. This number would not include things such as labor, rent, utilities or any other fixed cost.

If you purchase these items in bulk these costs should not exceed 20-30 cents per snow cone. Gross profit can easily exceed $1.75 to over $4 per snow cone. Now your job is to maximize sales in order to cover your operating costs. Rent, utilities and labor won’t really change whether you have 1 customer or 100 customers in an hour.

A solid rule of thumb provided by the 1-800-shaved-ice is to multiply each ounce of a cup by 2 cents. So a 12-ounce cup would have COGS of roughly 24 cents.

These are just a few of the reasons you should consider a snow cone stand for your 1st small business. I highly encourage you to check out other reasons and the various information we provide.

Common Problems Managers Face With Employee Scheduling

Employee scheduling issues count among the most well-known complaints reported by managers around the country. Many employers report that the problems they commonly face when working on a shift scheduling routine will include not having an employee schedule template suited to specific needs, uncommon shift rotations, and a higher than average turnover rate on the staff roster. A shift scheduling software solution that works for one company might not necessarily result in positive outcomes for yours.

Below we will examine the above mentioned common scheduling problems, and mention several solutions to each that managers in a variety of fields should find useful. In the end, the important factor to keep in mind is to find solutions specifically suited to the issues faced by your industry and your business. Scheduling software that works for one company might not necessarily result in positive outcome for yours.

A commonly reported problem from managers in a wide range of fields is that the scheduling software they use does not address specific hurdle faced in their day to day operations. Shift scheduling problems arising from this issue can be wide ranging, and include problems such as software not allowing for split shifts, difficulties in rearrangements for holiday periods or employee vacations, sudden shift changes, and staff roster seniority rankings.

Regardless of what the problem is with your shift scheduling software, the root cause is that your tools are not specially adjusted to meet your needs. To use another phrase, you are trying to fit a square peg in a rectangular hole. The best resolution for these problems is to research specific solutions for employee scheduling that are more tuned in to what your requirements are as a business.

Many business models today result in strange or awkward shift rotations for employees. Perhaps your employees have to arrive two times a day for several hours. Perhaps there are bi-weekly shifts, or even a 6-week rotation schedule that causes problems. These situations are all hard to manage and plan for without having the correct tools to work with. For example, what tools can you use to correctly keep track of employee work hours when they work every other day except the last Monday of each leap year?

If you are running into non-traditional scheduling issues, the best thing you can do is research alternatives to your current employee schedule template. Shift scheduling problems are only problems if you do not properly address the root causes. In other words, you need to upgrade your methods.

It can sometimes feel to you like you have just gotten adjusted to your employee staff scheduling needs, when someone leaves and throws your entire schedule out of whack. With a new employee comes new employee shift scheduling requirements, new days off, and a whole other list of problems. With the right shift scheduling and staff roster software, this should not be any more difficult than punching in a few staff scheduling parameters.

Managers face a variety of issues every day with employee scheduling, but with the right software and the right employee scheduling template, you are well on your way to boosting the success of your employee scheduling needs. All you need to do is put rubber to the road and consider your options.

Oil Rig Job Descriptions Plus More Great Information!

The oil rig job description most people imagine is manual labor and getting dirty, yet there are many wonderful opportunities involved as well…which should be taken into account as you weigh your career choices. Most importantly, if you are un-skilled or have no formal training in a trade and are at least 18 years of age the oil industry could be your best choice. Not many career paths invite high-school drop-outs to work for double what college graduates make after 4 years of education. Of course, you can’t just saunter on-board a rig without being scrutinized at all. Because oil rig job descriptions require you to be physically fit and able-bodied, an exam will determine whether or not you can handle the demands of oil life. But before you even apply, it’s crucial to know your options and advancement potential prior to getting on board.

Entry level oil rig job descriptions on a drill or deck crew include cleaning, painting, tool maintenance, and assisting superiors. The term used for a completely “green” hire is Roustabout. If you’ve had some experience in field drilling, you might be hired on as a Roughneck, who has more involvement in actual drilling operations. Also, if you do have a college degree in Chemistry, you might be hired in the mud room – but some knowledge of oil is required. Onshore welders, mechanics, electricians and painters can fit many entry level oil rig job descriptions as well, if you are honest about your prior experience.

Further up the chain of command are the Roughnecks, Crane Operators, Pumpmen, Derrickmen and Drillers. These job descriptions define key players in an oil rig operation. If you start out as a Roustabout, you’ll have the option of moving up into a Roughneck’s spot or, if your specialty is on deck, you might assist the Crane Operator, finally filling his/her position at a later date on the same rig or a different one.

All crew members work similar schedules, no matter their job description, that normally involve 12 hour days with three breaks throughout the day. Also, you will be working 14 days straight with no vacation. After that two weeks though, you’ll be able to enjoy 14 days off wherever you decide to go!

Caribbean Food – A Little History

The Arawak, Carib, and Taino Indians were the first inhabitants of the Caribbean islands. These first inhabitants occupied the present day islands of British Virgin Islands, Cuba, Dominica, Grenada, Haiti, Trinidad, and Jamaica. Their daily diet consisted of vegetables and fruits such as papaw, yams, guavas, and cassava. The Taino started the process of cooking meat and fish in large clay pots.

The Arawaks are the first people known to make a grate of thin green wood strips on which they slowly cooked meat, allowing it to be enhanced by the flavor of the wood. This grate was called a barbacoa, and the word we know today as barbeque is taken from this early Indian cooking method.

The Carib Indians added more spice to their food with hot pepper sauces, and also added lemon and lime juice to their meat and fish recipes. The Caribs are said to have made the first pepper pot stew. No recipes exist since every time the Indians made the dish, they would always add new ingredients. The Carib had a big impact on early Caribbean history, and the Caribbean sea was named after this tribe.

Then the Caribbean became a crossroads for the world . . .

Once the Europeans brought Africans slaves into the region, the slaves diet consisted mostly of food the slave owners did not want to eat. So the slaves had to be inventive, and they blended their traditional African foods with staples found on the islands. The Africans introduced okra, callaloo, fish cakes, saltfish, ackee, pudding and souse, mangos, and the list goes on.

Most present day Caribbean island locals eat a present diet that is reflective of the main ingredients of original early African dishes, and includes cassava, sweet potatoes, yams, plantains, bananas and corn meal.

African men were hunters in their homeland, and often away from home for long periods of time. They would cook spicy pork over hot coals, and this tradition was refined by the early slaves in Jamaica. The technique is known today as “jerk” cooking , and the secret involves a slow meat cooking process. Jamaica is famous for jerk chicken and pork, and you’ll find jerk all over the island.

After slavery was abolished, the Europeans went to India and China for labor, and more cooking styles were introduced. Much of the Indian cooking culture remains alive and well in the Caribbean of today with the introduction of curried meats and curry powder. Indians call it kari podi, and we have come to know this pungent flavor as curry.

The Chinese introduced rice, which is always a staple in home cooked island meals. The Chinese also introduced mustard, and the early Portuguese sailors introduced the popular codfish.

Most visitors to the Caribbean have no idea that the fruit trees and fruits so familiar to the islands were introduced by the early Spanish explorers. The fruit trees and fruits brought from Spain include orange, lime, ginger, plantains, figs, date palms, sugar cane, grapes, tamarinds and coconuts.

Even the Polynesian islands play an important role in Caribbean cooking. Most of us remember the movie “Mutiny on the Bounty”, but do not know that particular ship carried breadfruit, which was loaded on board from the islands of Tahiti and Timor. In the movie the crew took over the ship, forced the captain into a small boat to fend on his own, and they threw the breadfruit, which they considered “strange fruit” overboard. Another ship was more successful in bringing breadfruit from Polynesia to Jamaica and the St Vincent and the Grenadines. Breadfruit is a staple diet in the current day Caribbean

America is responsible for introducing beans, corn, squash, potatoes, tomatoes, and chili pepper to the Caribbean. In fact these particular foods had never been seen in Asia, Europe or Africa, so America actually introduced these foods the rest of the world via the Caribbean.

So it’s no wonder Caribbean cooking is so rich and creative with the flavors of Africa, India, and China, along with Spanish, Danish, Portuguese, French and British influences. Food served in the Caribbean islands have been influenced by the cultures of the world, but each island adds its own special flavor and cooking technique.

Jobs For People With Back Pain

Back pain is one of the leading causes of missed work and disability in the U.S. People with back conditions often have to modify their behaviors to manage pain, and this modification can interfere with the ability to perform your job.

Many people choose to or need to continue working in the face of chronic pain; this could be because of the difficulties surrounding disability or worker’s compensation payments, a desire to stay active or love for one’s job. Determining whether you can stay in your current line of work demands assessing your limitations and the flexibility of your work environment.

In general, people with chronic back pain need to avoid heavy lifting, prolonged sitting and prolonged standing/walking. The work environment must not demand repetitive motions that strain the back such as twisting. If it is possible to perform your job while either sitting or standing, you may be able to resume work. Ergonomics are an important consideration; work spaces must be designed to support proper body mechanics and limit back strain.

People with back injuries should cease construction work, landscaping, truck driving or any other job requiring hard physical labor or mandatory, prolonged sitting.

Best Jobs For People With Back Pain

Any job that is flexible concerning your position and doesn’t require heavy lifting may be possible for a person with back problems. If you can no longer continue the job you had before or are entering the job market for the first time and have back pain, consider the following work opportunities that are likely possible for people with back pain.

Freelancing is essentially applying your skills from home. Data entry, computer programming, web design, writing, data entry, editing, translating and researching are some of the skill sets that can land you a freelancing job. Working from home allows you to set your own schedule and take breaks for exercising and stretching whenever you choose. Be creative with your work station; set it up so that you can perform some of your work while standing. Sites like help connect freelancers to employers securely.

Teachers can often choose whether to sit or stand throughout the day and generally don’t need to perform physical labor. If you have or will obtain a bachelor’s degree, this profession may be an option for you.

With the right accommodations, jobs that require desk work can be possible for people with back injuries. An ergonomic workstation in an office, call center or customer service center will help keep you from straining your back. Taking breaks for quick walks, having the option to stand or sit at your desk and using an adjustable chair will make these types of jobs accessible to you.

Refer to the Job Accommodation Network’s website at for more information on workplace accommodations.

Don’t be fooled into thinking that a sedentary lifestyle is the answer to back pain; keeping active is one of the most important components of back pain treatment. Making adaptations to your work life may make employment possible to you. If not, a disability or worker’s compensation lawyer may get you the help you need.

Today’s World is a Most Dangerous Place

There is no denying the fact that today’s world is not doctrinaire, astute and cultured, rather it is full of hazards and alarming. Still nowadays, unconstrained social evils are widespread in the world. Not only in our country, but also in many parts of the world, sleaze, violence, dowry system, traffic congestion, pollutions and high rate of population survive terrifically. In earlier times, the people were peaceful in the sense that they did not know how to use weapons to mess up others. In modern world, the use of atomic energy has been impishly enhancing for which the safe and sound continued subsistence for humans are being meticulous day by day. If we look around the world, we will watch that the numbers of wars are increasing day by day for which the war against terrorism is a burning question right now. The history says, by a mammoth invasion of the terrorists, the world largest business centre situated in America has been crushed. It is a matter of great regret that the super power countries like USA, Germany, France, Russia and Great Britain failed to retaliate such attacks.

It is imperative to note that in Hiroshima and Nagashika of Japan during First World War, atom bomb had been unnerved on the soil of Japan, the first sun rising country. The end product of such atom bomb was so fatal that even today; such venomous influences are all-encompassing in the world on a large scale. Modern world is the world of threat, perils and painful and as such, the war of Vietnam was dangerous that unlimited people had been killed. The war of Iraq is most disparaging and scandalous because each and every day due to terror campaign attack, uncounted people are being killed irrespective of high or low. The peace loving forces are trying to control the country relating to law and order situation, but it is becoming difficult to control the country on the part of the alliance forces against the rebel forces. The rebel forces think that hey are fighting against the occupancy of foreign foes and according to them, they will fight till date until or unless Iraq is liberated. From the consequences of such war, we can decide that all wars cannot bring good harvest rather than the people of the world who do not find any ways to live with peace, society, friendship and love. In the midst of many arguments and debates, it seems that today’s world is full of perils and dangerous place.

Due to the fact that corruption exists immensely for which we can articulate that where there is no accountability, there lies corruption and it occurs in case of dealing money in exchange of anything. In my opinion, it is the sum of total resources expressed in terms of current monetary units and the discretion power which is the authority and empowerment to spend and minus accountability. Moreover, Smoking emerge due to delay in healing of stomach ulcers; it trims down the senses of smell and taste; slows down reflexes which causes smokers more prone to accidents; and gives an unpleasant smell from the breath, clothes, and homes of smokers. Very current survey illustrates that smokers endanger the health of non-smokers. Pregnant women smokers tend to have smaller babies than non-smokers, and their babies are more likely to be born dead or die a few days after birth. Besides such tremendously adverse affects, the children of smoking parents have more lung infections in the first years of life than the children of non-smokers. During one hour in a smoky room, a non-smoker can inhale as much cancer-causing substances as some one smoking 15 filter-tip cigarettes. Illness related to smoking is very expensive. In U.K., France, Germany, China and USA, it results in the loss of about 60 millions working days a year, treatment costs several hundreds thousands dollar a day, and it causes the death of over a million people a week. However, those who give up smoking greatly reduce their chances of developing diseases.

There is no denying the fact that the profligate limits of social life in our country envisage the identity as a great threadbare for overall affluence and fiscal accuracy in our country. It is certitude that the sociable evils like teen labor, acid sadism, dowry system, strangling maids, raping, indoor pollutions; corruption and drug addiction are mammoth constraints as mixed with our blood and bone. Drug craving and Alcoholism are the causes of social disorder for which a society remains congested from all sorts of progression. In case of personage prospect, drug obsession is atrocious work, which mingles many other fatalities like cancer, coronary, and phthisis. Drug addict is such phenomena with which a person fails to accomplish his bright lot, being laden with superstitious and mentally being disrobed, he becomes then unable to get rid of such bottleneck. Drug addiction is not only bad habits but also an evil force that spoils the men’s life. There is no suspicion that the young people are found more to be captivated as compared to other evil forces that tremendously affect people to go astray and miscarriage. They are somehow subjective to take drugs like heroine, chorus, phencidel, wine cigarettes, alcohol and many other addicted materials very harmful for health and hygiene. When a person somehow leaves hope of life, in due course he thinks that drug addiction is only the way for which he can survive on earth and as such in the next course, he takes drugs after drugs and become addicted. When in one time, he becomes obsessive; he cannot give up those addictions because he remains in the state of hallucinations and emotionally distortions. Hence Alcoholics do not drink simply for pleasure, but because they presume that they cannot face life’s problems ingrained in blood and bone without alcohol. It is a significant fact that more road mishap results from unwieldy ingestion than from any other cause. This is due to the fact that alcohol slows down reflexes, interferes with concentration and distance judgment, and increases recklessness. It is a fact that heavy drinking can cause cancer of the mouth, gullet, stomach, and liver. It upsets the digestion and reduces blood cell formation, causing anemia.

Suffice it to say that alcohol causes shrinkage of the brain, reducing the powers of abstract reasoning, and it destroys liver cells causing this organ to store abnormally large amounts of fat. In severe cases, alcoholics suffer numbness and paralysis of the limbs. Some alcoholics suffer a disorder known as delirium tremens when forced to stop drinking and besides this, vomiting occurs and the whole body begins to shake and in due course, it is followed by hideous and often ghastly visions. A drug can be defined as a chemical material that affects the mind and only the so-called hard drugs are irresistible. These include the opiates: opium, morphine, and heroine. A drug addict comes to depend upon a drug so that life is no longer bearable without it. Addiction occurs because, like alcohol, more and more of the drug is required to produce its desired effects. Furthermore, if the drug supply is out of the blue cut off an addict suffers withdrawal symptoms and these can be drastically lethal. That is to say, they become dependent upon alcohol without realizing it and as such for the first time, pleasing effects are produced by one or two drinks, but soon larger and larger amounts are needed to yield these effects, until self control is unduly irrevocable. Morphine, heroine, and other drugs that are often injected involve the risk of infection from dirt hypodermic needles.

Suffice it to say; in most places of the world, without corruption and malpractices, nothing is possible to be performed. Due to lack of honesty, sincerity and simplicity, the world has become unsuitable for living. Terrorism is another threat against healthy life in society. We need to be dedicated to work sincerely and painstakingly to eliminate such hurdles. Besides this, price hike is a great bottleneck against peaceful survival on earth because; the prices of all sorts of commodities are beyond the buying capacity of the people. In Bangladesh, floods, draught, cyclone, earthquake and epidemic diseases are the common visitors to the people of this beautiful land with ever green beauties of nature. The people living beside the sea shore always face misfortunes of water surge and thus they are being victimized almost every year; even if, in a year, they may be infected with such misfortunes. Besides sides, due to smoking and addictions of drugs, unlimited problems are being created every times for which the whole nation wants to get rid of from such hurdles. There exists a remarkable extent of evidences that a variety of awful diseases emerge often in smokers than non-smokers and these diseases are: Lung cancer; emphysema causing thinning and weakening of lung tissue; cancer of the mouth, throat, larynx, gullet, bladder, and pancreas; coronary thrombosis causing snarl-up of arteries to the heart; angina pectorals causing pain due to contraction of arteries to the heart; and chronic bronchitis with phlegm.

In view of the above it is significant that it is worth mentioning that the present world is the most dangerous place as it is full of hatred, jealousy, slothful, vindictiveness and competition of ill money which never support the features of a healthy society. Hence it is obvious that smoking has been unenthusiastic every times and as such, even in general advertisement to sell their product, the work of publication of product’s brand name and packaging system to indicate the quality of the product has been banned. Not only smoking, every kind of evils need to be banished from this world to present the modern age a healthy society bedded on trustworthy, love, friendship and responsibility to serve the humanity in this hereinafter virtually.

Benefits of a Wooden Dummy

Having problems with finding a sparring partner? Or you wake up in the middle of the night and decided to train but your class is not scheduled until tomorrow? These may only be some of the problems you have with regards to advance your training in martial arts. In reality, there may be more. The solution for that is to work with a wooden dummy, or better yet own one.

A wooden dummy has a cylindrical body with arms and a leg. Sometimes it is called a Muk Yan Jong or Mook Jong which means “wooden man post” and it is usually used in Wing Chun Kung Fu. However, its usage is not limited to this type. Another style that uses this training equipment often is Jeet Kune Do. Other forms differ depending on the style of martial arts that a practitioner studies.

There are a lot of advantages in developing your skills with the use of this equipment. Generally, it aims to improve your power, skill and precision. In fighting, it is important to develop these so that by the end of the fight, you’re the one standing while your opponent is lying on the floor. That would feel great, wouldn’t it?

If you have a mook jong to use at home, one recognizable benefit is that you can use it anytime you want. Whether you want to train in the middle of the night or during the wee hours of the morning, the dummy is available. No need to set an appointment and check if your training partner is available or not. It is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

In addition, you could practice with this specialized martial arts equipment with the use of martial arts training videos. There is a vast availability of training videos on the web or in the market. You could do this without the help of a training master. Not only you can save money from classes, you would not need to worry about what time you need to train during the day.

Using a wooden dummy can also help you develop your striking power. In practicing, it is not enough to deliver your strikes into thin air because you cannot estimate if your strength is good enough or not. Punching a wooden object could help you strengthen not only your hitting force but also your skin and muscles as well. In an actual training, you won’t be able to punch or kick as hard with a sparring partner.

Another advantage of its usage includes your opportunity to master the techniques in guarding and opposing an attack, kicks, balance and footwork. The proper positioning of your arms and legs, including your posture can also be practiced. Since it is available to use any time of the day, you can train as long as you want. The more you practice, the faster you can develop your skills.

A wooden dummy might not be able to fight you back during your training yet it is still very helpful so that you can polish your skills. Repetition is a good way to get better at something and as the old adage goes, “Practice makes perfect”. By the end of your training, you will be able to appreciate the fruits of your labor and commend a part of this to the wooden dummy who served as your training buddy.
