A Brief History Of Horror Movies

Horror movies has been around for almost as long as movies have been made. Before looking at the horror movie it may be best to look into horror in literature. Knowing this can help our understanding of horror films and where they come from.

Horror in literature left a legacy that helped to propel this genre into films. If there had not been such a legacy of literary works then we may not have the same movies we do now. The term horror was first coined in 1764 in a book by Horace Walpole’s called The Castle of Otranto which was full of the supernatural. In the following centuries literary giants like Edgar Allan Poe championed this genre with great works like The Raven. Some of the great horror movies of today are based on old horror stories like Frankenstein and Dracula which were both written in the 1800’s.

At the beginning of horror movie history these movies were often ones that had the supernatural in there. In the late 1890’s short silent films was where these movies start. The Frenchman Georges Melies is thought to be the creator of the first horror film with his 1896 short silent Le Manior du diable. Around this time the Japanese also tried their hand at this genre with Bake Jizo and Shinin no Sosei.

The first full horror film was an adaptation of the hunchback of Notre-Dame. Many of these first horror films were created by German film makers as the early 1900’s were the time of the German expressionist films. These films have influenced horror film makers for decades to Tim Burton. During the 1920’s Hollywood started dabbling in the horror genre with Lon Chaney Sr. Becoming the first American horror star.

It was in the 1930’s that the horror film was first popularized by Hollywood. Along with the classic Gothic films Frankenstein and Dracula there were also films made with a mix of Gothic horror and the supernatural. In 1941 The Wolf Man was an iconic werewolf movie created by Universal studios. This was not the first werewolf movie made but is known as the most influential. During this era other B pictures were created like the 1945 version of The Body Snatcher.

In the 1950’s there had been many innovations in the technology used to make films. Additionally in this time the horror film was divided into two categories being Armageddon films and demonic films. During this time social ideas and fears were placed into movies but in such a way that it was not direct exploitation.

The 1960’s were the time when many iconic movies came about. Hitchcock’s movie The Birds was against a modern backdrop and was one of the first American Armageddon films. Perhaps one of the most influential films of this time was Night of the Living Dead. This movie brought zombies into the mainstream and it also moved these movies from the Gothic horror to what we know today.

The history of horror movies goes back to the beginning of movies. The long history shows how they changed from Gothic classics to what we know today.

History And Background Of Betta Fish

Historically speaking, Betta Fish are said to have gotten their name from an ancient clan of Asian warriors called the “Bettah.” They were given these warriors’ names because about 150 years ago people enjoyed participating in a popular sport that involved the fighting of two of these warrior fish. (In fact, the sport was so popular that it was regulated – and taxed – by the King of Siam!)

One interesting note about Betta fish fighting is that, unlike cock or dog fighting in the west, at Siamese fighting fish tournaments, the actual fight was more to test the bravery of the fish, rather than a fight to see how much damage would be inflicted, or a death match.

Spectators bet on how long a particular fish would fight, and which one would give up first. (In fact, most fish would only fight once or twice, and then live out the remainder of their lives being pampered and used for breeding.)

Natural Habitat

A Betta fish’s natural habitat is in shallow, tropical water. This is because they need to be able to surface frequently, in order to breathe air. They can be found in nature in rice paddies, drainage ditches, slow moving streams and fresh water ponds. Betta fish have even been known thrive in large puddles! Their natural food source is insects and mosquito larvae.

How Breeding Began

According to historical accounts, a close friend of the King of Siam, Dr. Theodore Cantor received a pair of breeding Bettas from the king in 1840. The doctor bred them and studied them for several years, and then wrote a scientific paper about them, giving them a Latin name of “Macropodus Pugnax.” However, shortly after his paper was published, Dr. Cantor discovered that a species by that name already existed, and so the fish were renamed “Betta Splendens.”

Several breeding pairs of Bettas where sent to Germany in 1896 and then in 1910, Mr. Frank Locke of San Francisco California imported several Bettas to the U.S.A.

One of the fish that he received had unusual red fins – and he excitedly thought he had discovered a new species, and named it “Betta Cambodia.” In reality, he had one of the first of the Betta splendens that had naturally developed new colors and characteristics through breeding.

Since that time, breeders have been able to develop Bettas with all of the vibrant coloring and varied fin shapes that we find today. Betta breeding has become a profitable and ongoing passion for many people today, many of whom started with just one or two Bettas in a small aquarium.

4 Different Types of Marketing Copy

Whether it is offline or online content, most companies fail to make a distinction between the different types of content they publish. Often a failure to do this makes it harder to communicate with readers and satisfy their needs.

On occasions, each type will over-lap, but to begin with it helps to make the distinction between:

1. Transactional Copy – that makes readers want to buy

As a marketer, this is the most important type. If you have a product or service to sell be upfront about the fact that you want to sell it! Too many companies present what they offer as information – in the hope that someone will buy.

Customers who are in a buying frame of mind want to be sold to. The easier you can make it for them the more likely they will be to buy. This means being crystal clear on:

  • Your offer
  • Your price
  • Your benefits
  • Your credibility
  • Your guarantee

You also need to give very clear instruction on what you want them do. If they need to fill in a form, tell them. Just don’t assume they will do what you want.

Often, the more intellectual a product or service, the more resistant the company is to use sales language to sell. It is a very British trait, somehow linked to the idea that selling is vulgar and what ‘sales-people’ do.

If you are in that camp, you need to get over it. In this economic downturn getting good at writing copy that sells is gong to be the most important type of content you publish.

2. Information – that educates the reader

We are all dependent on information. Your readers want information that:

  • Educates them about your product or service
  • Is concise in the way that it is written and presented
  • Is from a reputable source so that it can be relied upon
  • Can be accessed quickly and easily.

When readers are in ‘information only’ mode they don’t want to be sold to. It’s important to make that distinction so that you deliver only what is relevant.

With printed material, the content carries a physical sense of authority and professionalism. When online, the expectation is slightly different. Your reader either wants to be informed instantly or to discover the reputable source. This is why it is sometimes more cost effective to offer specialist content via a free report in .pdf format or a separate HTML page.

3. News – that is instantly memorable

The decline in newspaper circulation doesn’t mean that you don’t want to be informed. Instead, online media means that you can mix and match the way you receive news. If you are happy to receive it in a very granular form, then the smaller the granule the more likely you are to digest other bits.

The BBC News Channel is probably the best example of this. It’s brilliant at giving you the facts but giving you to the option to go for more detail.

In contrast, most businesses tend to use News as a way of boring the reader about a recent achievement. They go into far too much detail when the focus should be on ‘selling’ just one or two memorable facts.

4. Lifestyle – that touches the emotions

This type of content is about brand and image. It’s designed to appeal at an emotional level so that what is published creates a sense of desire. High street retailers are obvious examples here.

There is minimal copy because the content is image led. Here, the psychology of colour comes into stronger play than the use of words. Look at any expensive/upmarket product and often you will see a design that uses a mix of red, black and gold. These are aspirational colours associated with wealth, mystery and luxury.

Lifestyle content is obviously expensive to produce so it needs to be thought of as part of long-term brand value.

Your objective is to be clear about the type of content you are working with and who the target reader is in order to have a ‘message to market’ match.

Criminal History Background Check – How to Get Complete Background Checks

There are lots of organizations that provide a criminal history background check to the general public not to mention to corporations and everyone in the middle. Because there are so many companies to work with, it can be difficult to find out which ones are the most effective options for you to think about. The goal you need to have, is simply how well each business can offer the information that you might want, and just how trustworthy that info really is. When you consider this stuff, take the time to insure that they are capable of providing you with the vital information checks you need and deserve.

What should the company that you work with provide for you? Let's take a look at some of the features that are necessary for you to have in a criminal records company.

What can they offer? The company should provide you with both the ability to receive a criminal record as well as a criminal history background check on the person. The two are extremely different issues and without the other, one will be useless for your requirements. It does not offer a complete look at all that is necessary and offered. A company that does not supply both of these services is not enabling you to get a full view of the individual.

Good reputation. You are able to find out more about the good reputation of the company from the internet. People love to complain about issues that they got so simply search for reviews or comments about the company online. In addition, there is no telling the capabilities that you have here when you get the consumer viewpoint.

Affordable prices. Acquiring a price which is really cheap just is not okay, however one that is reasonably priced is. Have a look at a number of businesses to ascertain exactly what that is. You will pay a respectable amount for detailed info, but that is a modest price to pay what you'll receive in return including reassurance.

One thing that you need to take note of concern a criminal history background check, is the capability to secure information which is up to date. Keep in mind, that these businesses are only able to pull information that's in the system. Sometimes, that is not completely updated or even tracked effectively. Thus, insuring that you utilize a business that will give you accurate details are critical. The truth is, all of these things play an essential part in the criminal record search industry.

The History of the Ballotin – The Classic Belgian Chocolate Gift Box

This year celebrates the 100th anniversary of the ballotin. I am sure that every Belgian chocolate connoisseur has opened one – or many – of these ballotin boxes in their life. In fact, since its creation in 1915, the ballotin has always been around, carefully filled with chocolates in a countless number of shops or voraciously enjoyed by thousands of chocolate lovers around the globe. This box is elegant yet understated in its appearance, and it shows the content while successfully protecting it.

The beginning of the last century saw two major inventions that changed the way people enjoyed chocolate:

In 1912 Jean Neuhaus developed a technique that made possible, for the first time, to create chocolates with a soft filling. This first invention was called the "praline". These chocolates continued to be sold wrapped in paper, a traditional method that however had two major drawbacks: it was not able to display the chocolates in an elegant way and even worse it offered very little protection, often damaging or compromising the look of the pralines .

As chocolates were becoming more and more sophisticated, with attractive designs and complex fillings, the Belgian chocolate kitchens were crying out for a box designed specifically to suit their needs. A gift box that would be beautiful and elegant but also practical in their ability to protect the chocolates from being damaged on the way home.

In 1915 their crores were answered, Louise Agostini, wife of Jean Neuhaus Jr, designed the first ballotin (from ballot, French term for "small package of goods"), a box in which the chocolates could be packed safely. It was also an aesthetically marvellous design, simple but elegant, easy to fill and close with its flips elegantly secured with a ribbon. To the delight of the other chocolate houses of the time, Jean Neuhaus decided not to patent this invention, and that is why nowdays all the top tier Belgian chocolate manufacturers sell their chocolates in this timeless gift box.

One hundred years on, the Master Belgian chocolatiers use the ballotin more than ever, in fact this box can be considered the signature of the finest Belgian chocolatiers. While there have been a few minor changes in design over the years to allow for more efficient manufacturing processes the simple aesthetic beauty of this gift box remains the same making it one of the most recognizable items in the world of luxury foods.

A Quick History of Wine Making

Wine has not always been the amazing product that it currently is. It has gone through several changes over the years. This is due to all of the different cultures that have adopted, loved and improved it over the millennia.

Wine making historians believe wine making to date back to around 4000 BC. It originated in the cradle of civilization, also known as the fertile crescent. This is now modern-day Iraq. The two rivers of the Tigris and Euphrates helped to create a growing condition where wine was first discovered and crafted.

From the middle east, wine then was adopted by Egyptian people who improved it by creating new systems of irrigation and fertilization that improved crop yield and quantity. The ancient Egyptians also created hybrid grapes that were better suited for the conditions of Egypt’s arid landscape. The Egyptian people used wine in their ceremonies and it was drank mostly by the upper class while lower class people preferred beer instead.

The wine making process also traveled north to the Greek and Roman cultures who not only embraced it but named one of their gods after this treasured drink. The Romans named their god of win Bacchus. They would also spread the knowledge of winemaking throughout the rest of Europe as they conquered it.

Once the Romans headed into what is now present-day Britain, it was picked up be the Gaels who improved on it by ageing their wines in wooden barrels to add a distinct flavor to it.

The Romans also spread their wonderful technology to the Spanish people who in turn carried the wine making knowledge to central and South America Where they would plant vineyards and grow and produce their own wine products.

Wine would also travel into ancient China shortly after the Han Dynasty around 200 BC. Wine grapes were imported into and cultivated there ever since. Because of the commonality of rice in that country, rice wine is still the preferred drink of choice.

During the middle ages, wine making history shows that improvements were made to wine by members of the catholic church. These improvements included records about their wine production and guides about how to make it and improve upon their already wonderful drink. It was the order of Benedictine monks that would be France and Germany’s largest producers of wine. During this period, wine was also discovered to have curative properties against snake bites.

It was during the middle ages that the French also made improvement to wine making.

The English and French pilgrims brought this product with them into the new world. The new world being North America where it flourished and has become the refined version that it is today.

Wine making has improved greatly over the past century because of improvements in sanitation. This has helped to keep the wine for longer periods of time and ensures that almost every batch will turn out the way it is supposed to and not turn into vinegar due to bacterial contamination.

Wine and the wine making process has had a history that has lasted nearly eight thousand years. During its lifetime it has been vastly improved, honored and even worshiped. There is no way of knowing what the future of wine entails, but what ever that might be, this drink is here to stay.

Confused On Which Application Monitoring System to Buy

Majority of enterprises use some type of network monitoring system to monitor their IT infrastructure. A superior network monitoring system will track tools for uptime, bandwidth usage and track end-to-end system performance. While this type of monitoring solution is useful when issues occur on the network it doesn’t help when there is any issue with any application. IT organizations require multiple applications to support their entire business. Having the devices in place to monitor these applications is a life saver when things go wrong. Let’s have a closer look why application monitoring systems are required and what are the available application monitoring solutions.

Why Application Monitoring Required

Application monitoring tools track those applications which are not functioning properly, even if users are able to access it. For instance, all of a sudden your users cannot access email. A monitoring system will notify you or send an alert on a dashboard that a service is not working. Being able to rapidly identify troubles with organizations applications will allow the smooth functioning of the IT system and at the same time deliver better services to the users.

End to end application monitoring will offer you a quick overview of your applications, trend reports, performance analysis and identify growth areas. All these information is necessary when it comes to planning, addressing SLA’s and fixing troubles before it cause major outages.

Solutions for Monitoring Application Performance

There is a wide variety of options to choose from, when it comes to finding an application monitoring solution. It entirely depends on your needs. There are standalone applications for monitoring single systems and there are enterprise monitoring solutions that can monitor multiple systems on your network. Open source applications and commercial applications are also available. Some features that you should look for before determining what best fits your needs are:

Performance Management: You should look for a product that offers a lot of monitoring parameters for instance, CPU, response time, memory etc.

Web Console: Ensure that you are able to access the console from a browser as it is the easiest way to manage applications.

Alerting System: Look for different type of alarms as per your requirements. Email alerting, syslog, SMB traps, text message are some of the alerting types.

Administration Roles: Look for different roles such as administrator, manager, operator, user, etc.

Reporting: Having a strong reporting system helps to determine trends and potential issues.

These are just a few basic features to look for. Majority of application monitoring solutions provide a long list of features.

Don’t skip out on monitoring your organization’s applications. A real time monitoring solution can be a life saver and maintain the smooth functioning of your IT infrastructure.

Improve Your Squash: Advantages of Watching the Ball at All Times

Watching the squash ball during a rally is the most important thing you can do to improve your game. Never ever take your eyes of the ball during a rally. if you are afraid of watching the ball when behind you, wear protective eyewear. It is impossible to reach your potential if you don’t consistently keep your eyes on the ball. Watching the ball as it leaves your opponent’s racquet, in particular when the ball is behind you, will dramatically increase on how you are able to:

Better judge your opponent’s shot

You will get the first idea of where your opponent’s shot is going when the ball leaves his racquet. You can gather information on the direction, the trajectory, the speed and the height of the shot for your brain to calculate where you will need to be to meet it. To accurately track the ball, it is necessary to keep your eye on the ball at all times. If you wait to see the ball come off of the front wall you have lost about half of the valuable trajectory input necessary to accurately judge the shot played.

Better anticipate your opponent’s shot

Only by watching the ball that split second at impact coming off your opponent’s racquet will let you anticipate his shot.

Important: If you are turning your head back to the front wall prior to impact you are not anticipating, you are guessing! To volley well in particular you need to see the ball early to be on your way to intercept it. If you learn to anticipate if they’re driving, dropping, boasting or going cross-court then that is half the battle right there. Anticipation only works with watching the ball when it is behind you.

Research demonstrates that “expert”players can predict the opponent’s shot to a very high accuracy level up to 600 milliseconds before impact. Important cues for making anticipatory decisions – movement of the arm and racquet especially 160-80ms before impact and the flight of the ball immediately (up to 80ms) after impact.

The two main sources of information that are used by expert players are:

1. Probability – the opponent’s strategic habits, the opponent’s technical abilities and his/her court position;

2. Postural cues given off by the opponent – specifically the arm and racquet movement leading up to contact with the ball.

Research has shown that expert players do not have better “vision”than beginners nor do they look at different cues to beginners when searching for information on which to base their decision about what is about to happen. Rather, expert players appear to make better use of the information available – especially with regard to the opponent’s arm and racquet action.

Expert players also identify or pick up patterns of play better than beginners.

Anticipation skills range from the simple – predicting the bounce of the ball, through to the ability to read the play sufficiently well to volley a fast paced ball hit from the front court by a “deceptive” player. These skills become automatic with experience but traditionally, we have only developed these skills by playing matches.

Better move around the court, have a better rhythm

Watching the ball when it is behind you is vital for movement. This, in turn, will increase your speed to the ball and allow you to move at the appropriate speed, not overrunning the ball. Overrunning the ball is one of the biggest problems at a beginner level.

If you watch the front wall, you will only have the sound of your opponent hitting the ball or the ball coming into your peripheral vision to react too. This will often have your feet moving late or very late respectively, and make it a huge disadvantage in getting to your opponent’s tight shots.

watching improves your speed around the court dramatically without getting any faster physically. I believe watching the ball well will get you way faster around the squash court than getting physically faster.

Only through consistently watching the ball coming off your opponent’s racquet when the ball is behind you in the back court will you learn a rhythm to move around the squash court.

Rhythm is an integral part in any sport, facilitating all movements.

Make better tactical decision

The more time available you have in this fast game, the better your decisions tend to be.

Play safer and avoiding decisions against you.

Watching helps you getting out of the way of the racket swing, and ball, while your opponent is returning the shot. Wear eyewear if you are afraid to watch. Without watching the ball your progress will be limited and can be dangerous. Watch the ball and if you are too close and within the “line of fire” move out of the way, but do not take your eye off the ball. You can’t always go back to the T when you hit a loose shot. Move your T position if necessary.

The downside of not watching the ball when your opponent is behind is that you may be guilty of not clearing, and even worse, not attempting to clear. That can be the difference between a stroke and a let.

Dent Repair – The Secrets

Does your new car have a dent in the door? Has hailed damaged the Roof or Boot? If so, dent repair is probably your best option. In the past few years, paintless dent repair has offered an alternative to the traditional dent fix. Paintless dent repair does not damage the paint on your vehicle and it is much cheaper than the usual methods of dent removal.

The secret behind dent repair is that there is not "beating out" of the dents, nor removing parts of your car. This is one of the reasons it's much cheaper than some of the older methods for dent repair. A normal dent repair will cost only a fraction of a traditional repair that is completed within a repair shop.

Paintless dent repair is a very skilled procedure. In order to achieve the best results, the process requires experience, patience, and the right tools. Since there is no painting involved, the job is completed much faster and can be done as a mobile business. This means the dent repair professional can come to the customer.

The process requires the repair specialist to gradually push the metal back to where it's supposed to be. This is done a small section at a time and depending upon the size of the dent, may require a few hours to complete. There are several tools that are needed to complete the job properly.

The tools are long, flat, and very rigid in order to allow the correct amount of pressure to be applied, without the tool bending. These tools are slid into the gap found behind the panel. Pressure is applied to the dent from behind, but it's done slowly to move the metal back into its original shape, a little bit at a time. If done correctly, there should be no damage to the paint on the other side of the panel.

Many companies are providing mobile services for dent repair. The secret to a great dent removal job is to provide the specialist with enough room to work. This will help the repair specialist to provide the amount of pressure needed to correctly push the metal back into place.

You'll now find many paintless dent repair tools are sold to the public. However, without the proper training, you can easily cause a ripple in the metal or the paint to crack or chip. This will require a much more expensive repair bill and even a repair shop may not be able to completely remove the dent. It's best to leave it to the professionals.

Paintless dent removal is recommended as an alternative to the more conventional methods. However, you need to be certain you have a trained, qualified professional to achieve the best results. There are many companies that do not provide enough training to their employees and the results can be rather costly.

For those people that have two or three dents, it's often much easier on the wallet to have them all fixed at once. Understand that not all dents may be removed by paintless dent repair. The location of the dent is the determining factor, as well as if there is a crease in the metal. Paintless dent removal can work on some creases, but it depends on how deep it is, as well as how long it is. Consult with a professional dent removal specialist to find out how they can help you.
